I’m a developing a new obsession for Instagram. Surprisingly, I like looking at beautiful photos from other instagramers, but I’ve never put any effort into growing my own account. Until last week.
I honestly don’t know what happened to me; I was at my mom’s house, bored as hell because my mom wasn’t there, not in the mood for blogging, which explains why I was procrastinating on my laptop (don’t judge me, I know you do this too!).
After an hour of intense procrastination, I stumbled upon an article about the VSCO app. If you haven’t heard of VSCO yet, don’t worry, I will give you more details in a minute.
So I looked at the Instagram feeds that were in this article, and that had been created with this app. Curiosity took over, I ended up downloading the app in the next minute, and decided that I was going to become a real Instagrammer. Just like that.
I spent the next three days after that living Instagram, eating Instagram, sleeping Instagram, BREATHING Instagram. I spent days searching for Instagram strategies and seeking for the best tips from top Instagrammers.
I’m sharing with you today the 7 things I do and that you can do too to grow your Instagram account. This sudden interest for Instagram got me wanting to write an Instagram post, because that’s how I deal with my obsessions; I write about them.

1. Update your bio & profile name
Growing your Instagram account starts with upgrading your bio and making your profile name a little less boring.
I added a little heart emoji next to my profile name, but you can also play with capital letters, spaces, symbols, and any other detail that could make your profile name a little more “stylish”.
As for your bio, it’s the perfect place to make your (brand) personality shine! Write your mantra, your current city, your interests. Anything to make your potential followers know who you are and what your Instagram account as to offer.
2. Care for your Profile picture
Your profile picture is the first thing that Instagrammers will see, and it tells them more than you think about your profile before they even clicked on it.
If you pay attention to your own behaviour as an Instagramer, you will notice that you probably judge an account before you click on it, just by looking at its profile picture.
That is because you know that the photo you’re seeing on that little circle is like a sample of what you will find inside of the account; poor quality profiles have poor quality profile photos, and beautiful profiles have beautiful profile photos (that match with their feed theme). That’s just the way it is.
So give other instagrammers the will to click on your profile by using a beautiful profile photo. It does make a difference!
3. Use quality photos
The whole concept of Instagram is about sharing beautiful photos. Instagram is a visual social media, and you cannot expect to grow a massive following with poor quality photos. You just can’t.
Most people on Instagram don’t follow you because they appreciate you as a person (except for your friends and family, but you probably don’t have 1.5 million family members), they follow you because they want to have pretty things to look at when they log into their account in the morning and scroll through their feed.
Always remember that when you post a picture, quality is ALWAYS the most important. Posting photos taken at 11pm with a poor lightening of your cat sleeping with your Pikachu blanket as a background is not an option.
4. Have a themed profile
Probably the most heard Instagram tip EVER, but I can’t write a post about growing your Instagram following without mentioning this.
Deciding on a theme for your Instagram profile is CRUCIAL. Posting quality photos is not enough, they all have to look harmonious as a whole. Because that “whole” is what people are gonna see when visiting your profile. And it’s what’s gonna make them follow you!
That’s when VSCO comes into play.
VSCO is a photo editing app that offers tons of filters that you can apply to your photos. This app is the secret to many successful Instagram accounts. It’s the reason why I was FINALLY able to create and maintain a consistent theme for my profile.
Since VSCO is become more popular each day, you can find tons of VSCO filter ideas on google image to get inspired. Play with the different filters, and see what’s best for you!
5. Use the right hashtags
Hashtags allow other instagrammers to find you and your photos, which is why they’re important. Whenever you add a photo, make sure to add as many hashtags as you can. 30 is the maximum.
Write the hashtags that come to your mind when posting the picture, then you can download the Tagsforlikes App (free) to give you an idea of more hashtags to use.
When it comes to hashtags, there is really only one thing to remember: The more hashtags, the better!
6. Post frequently
If you want to really grow your account, you need to post often. And my often, I mean not when you remember, not once every other day, but once a day minimum. I’m currently at twice a day.
All of the most successful Instagram accounts post one photo per day minimum. I believe that the Instagram algorithm “rewards” you when you post often.
You know the following suggestions you see when looking at someone’s feed? They are always (very) active Instagrammers. That is not a coincidence. The more active you are on Instagram, the more visibility your account gets.
7. Be social
Instagram is a social media, so be social. VERY, very social. I spend at least an hour a day visiting profiles, liking and commenting on their photos. That’s how you grow your Instagram account quickly!
Go to a popular profile of your own niche, that’s where your potential followers are. So click on their profile, and start socializing! Like several of their photos, leave a comment, and if you really like their feed, follow them.
Not all of them will follow you back or comment back on our photos, but a lot of them will. You may even create connections and become Instagram besties with some of them!
Also, but that goes without saying, always reply to anyone who leaves you a comment. No one likes ignorance, and if you don’t respond to their comment or at least like it, they may never comment under your posts ever again.
That was a hell of a long post, but I really wanted to give you as many info as possible to grow your Instagram following. Instagram really is an amazing platform, and I like it more everyday.
Don’t forget to follow me on Instagram if you like my feed, I would love to have some new Instagram friends!
